Going out with a banger

As much as I love firework night, standing in a field and watching an organised display does not really get me enthused. I think I've only taken my children once to a display but they don't seem to be bitter about it. Maybe it's because we have created our own tradition each November 5th...

We live in a town, with houses and bungalows on all sides. We can pretty much be guaranteed a "display" from someones garden, or even the local school. So why go out?

Long ago we decided our garden was a great place to watch fireworks, while enjoying our own feast of sausage, beans and baked potatoes. We always start with a mug of spicy soup made from the halloween pumpkins πŸŽƒ We bought sparklers for the children and had fun writing in the dark.

In recent times as T&H got bigger, we opted for a barbeque. Nothing stops us! I always remember the rainy bonfire night when H and best friend E sat by the fire pit under an umbrella baking cookies over the fire. What a great experiment! They were delicious πŸ˜‹ Check out my chocolate and almond cookie dough recipe as an option. Bake in a frying pan over the heat. Takes time, but, hey, when it's raining there's loads to talk about when you're teenagers πŸ˜‰. When it's dry use the time to sparkle! 🌟🌟🌟

So, tonight was no different. BBQ lit and sparklers to hand. The soup is warming and sprinkled with pumpkin seeds, Heck Halloweiner sausages (which are fabulous!!) and burgers sit by the fire ready to feel the heat. Just add salad and brioche burger buns. Finish with hot chocolate as the embers dwindle. If you time it right, the fireworks crescendo hits about then, so you can sit back and watch with wonder. Do we ever lose the magic? I hope not!

Hope you had a great bonfire night too! Don't forget to let me know what you cooked up and share any ideas for another day.

Here's to happy family evenings like this 😊
