Time out
Wow! I can't believe it has been more than 10 days since I last wrote on here! And that obviously means I have not been keeping up with my challenge, so this weekend I need to focus and get back to it!
I realise, however, that I have been dipping into recipes that were new for the challenge and I have tried again. Last weekend, having spent some time in Reading and Oxford - more about that in a bit - I had prepared Chicken Tikka and a Potato and Cauliflower curry (see archives) on Thursday evening, which I could cook on the Saturday evening when we returned. How nice not to have something packaged for quickness, but instead have our own 'takeaway'. I already had a stack of Onion Bhajis in the freezer, so it was a perfect opportunity to use them too. Happy faces all round!
In Reading, we did treat ourselves to a meal out on the Friday, early evening. I cannot recommend 'Giraffe' enough. Find it on the river in The Oracle Shopping complex - http://www.theoracle.com/ Giraffe has simple, but great food, served by fantastic staff, in a music-filled restaurant.
We turned up in half price drinks time, and although the alcoholic cocktails were tempting, an elderflower, mint and pomegranate soda cocktail was what we went for, and we were glad of the refreshment after our walk around the city.
Then came the food... We both opted for the prawn cocktail with it's Bloody Mary sauce, and wow did that have a kick! I followed this with a salmon fishcake...
This was so 'homemade' in style, it was falling apart, which the waitress apologised for, but I loved! How often do you go out for food and get something so perfect, it doesn't look like it has just been made? This looked like I had tried to have a go, and it is probably something I would like to try as it was delicious! Even the tartare sauce had lumps of gherkin and whole capers in - a far cry from the one I use from the supermarket!
It was a great meal and one that will take us back again. Thank you Giraffe - and thanks for the giraffe cocktail stirrer too - H loved it! Check it out at http://www.giraffe.net/
During the week, there has been pizza, fish and a final flourish for H in her last week of study leave, her homemade meatballs. This time served with a tomato sauce and spaghetti - delicious!
Well, a food filled week, but not a cooking week. Back to the kitchen, I think!! ;-)
