Holiday scrapbook

Holidays are the perfect opportunity to gather foodie ideas (and even some recipes if chefs or waiters are willing!).

Our stay-in-the-uk holiday started in the Kings Arms Hotel attached to the wall and gates of the royal palace of Hampton Court - http://www.hamptoncourthotel.com/default.htm. Having arrived too early to access the palace, we skirted the boundary in search of a latte to start the day. Doris was outside placing flowers on the seating, and welcomed us into the 300 year old building. Here we sat on leather sofas whilst we waited for our coffee.

When you are looking for simple ways to add an 'extra' to your presentation at home, it can sometimes come unexpectedly. It's great to find something easy to do that makes you smile like a child...

...in this case, a shot glass of smarties - you are never too old to eat these! Definitely something you will find me serving in the future.

Hampton Court is everything you would expect and more. A fabulously well-run historic monument. R and I had a wonderful day and would recommend it to everyone! As part of our afternoon tea in the cafe, R chose a Honey Mead Cake, which was unusual and rich. In searching online, I have found a peach and mead cake so far. I will keep searching, but if anyone out there has a recipe...

A sumptuous afternoon tea with scones,
Honey Mead Cake and Belgian Chocolate cake!

Venturing further afield, we stayed at Down Hall Country House Hotel (http://www.downhall.co.uk/) for one night, and although the room was nice, but in need of a little TLC in some places, the food was fantastic! We both chose a beetroot and chorizo risotto with chicken which although I tried to get the recipe and didn't succeed, I am going to try to recreate soon.

Delicious beetroot and chorizo risotto

This was followed by Down Hall Eton Mess - WOW! the BEST Eton Mess I ever ate! And the best looking Eton Mess too...

Eton Mess Down Hall style on a slate

And then the final meal of the week at The White Horse Hotel afforded us the opportunity to try their Garlic Mushrooms on toasted Brioche - Mmmmmmm...

Didn't last long!

Lots of good ideas to try out. Better get cooking! ;-)
